TOO HEAVY: Robbers had stolen vehicle for use in botched attempt

KUANTAN: PAHANG Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) chairman Datuk Johny Ch'ng Ewe Gee was shocked when he was informed that his lorry had been used by five men to cart away an automated teller machine from a bank on Friday.

"I believe the suspects had stolen my lorry around midnight as my staff had parked it behind a building in Jalan Bukit Ubi at 10pm on Thursday," he said yesterday.

The businessman said he knew about the theft only on Friday after his staff realised that the one-tonne lorry was stolen and lodged a police report at 9am.

He commended the public for alerting the police when they saw the ATM theft.

"MCPF always stresses on a strong cooperation between the public and police to help combat crime.

"Due to the swift action by an eyewitness, police arrested all the suspects in fewer than two hours."

In the theft at 3.30am on Friday, the five suspects used the lorry to pull out the ATM from a bank in Indera Mahkota 5 here.

However, they were unable to load the ATM into the lorry because of its weight.

A passer-by who saw their botched attempt immediately alerted the police.

ATM carted away in minutes

SUBANG JAYA: It only took a matter of minutes, some rope, spray paint and an MPV for three masked men to make off with an ATM containing over RM200,000.

At 3.30am yesterday, the three entered a bank in Putra Heights here and sprayed green paint on the two CCTVs there.

The men then tied a rope around the machine and dragged it out using the MPV.

The men carried the machine which weighs about 150kg and loaded it into the MPV before speeding off.

Subang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Yahaya Ramli said the security guard on duty alerted the police at 3.44am.

The police have acquired the CCTV footage to try to identify the suspects before the cameras were spray-painted on.

ACP Yahaya confirmed that the number plate of the getaway vehicle recorded by the security guard was false.

“The ATM had RM229,380 inside,” he said.

Since January this year, there have been a number of ATM robberies with the most recent on March 15 when a group of robbers carted away an ATM containing RM85,000 from a supermarket.

On March 4, two robbers broke into two ATMs in Pontian, Johor, and made off with close to half a million ringgit.

The robbers used a metal saw to cut open the machines at the Tabung Haji building at about 4am.

Gang escapes with RM456,000 after forcing open two ATMs

PONTIAN: A gang of burglars forced open two automated teller machines (ATM) at the Lembaga Tabung Haji building here and escaped with more than RM456,000 on Monday.

The four-man gang had also used duct tape to cover the lens of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera before carrying out the theft about 4am.

Pontian police chief Superintendent Zahaliman Jamin said the gang was believed to have used metal cutters, based on metal filings found at the scene of the crime.

The gang had earlier, used a lorry to block the CCTV from capturing their image when they first arrived at the scene, he told reporters at the Pontian police headquarters here.

About two hours earlier, the same gang was believed to have failed in an attempt to force open another ATM at the Benut Post Office, about 20km away.

Zahaliman said, in that attempt, the gang had sprayed paint the CCTV lens to prevent their image from being captured. - Bernama

Robbers break into three ATMs

PETALING JAYA: Robbers struck at three Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) at two supermarkets and a bank within two and a half hours yesterday.

The CCTV recorders in both supermarkets were also taken by the robbers, who had used oxy-acetylene torches to cut through the ATMs.

However, the robbers of the third ATM at the bank failed to get anything after they tried to pull the machine using chains fastened to a truck.

In the first case at Taman Connaught in Cheras, supermarket staff were about to open their premises for business at about 7am yesterday when they saw an ATM broken into.

Police later found that the robbers had drilled through a wall of a Tenaga Nasional Bhd substation which was adjacent to the supermarket before entering the supermarket.

City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ku Chin Wah said that the losses from the Cheras ATM were still being ascertained.

The same scenario was also repeated in Taman Kinrara in Puchong when supermarket employees were about to start work at 7.50am yesterday.

Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Razak Elias said that about RM70,000 was missing.

“The suspects were believed to have drilled a hole through the garbage bin store before entering the supermarket,” he said when met at the scene.

Earlier, two robbers in Kepong tried to pull an ATM at a bank in Kepong using chains hooked to a truck. However, SAC Ku said that they abandoned their attempt at about 5.30am.

“The suspects abandoned the ATM and escaped taking their chains with them,” SAC Ku said in a press conference.

Robbers make ‘withdrawal’ at bank

JOHOR BARU: Daring robbers made off with an automated teller machine from a bank in Taman Desa Cemerlang here by dragging the machine out with a four-wheel drive.

The incident occurred between midnight and 1am yesterday and it is believed that the robbers had been planning the heist for days.

“Some staff members noticed that a car was parked outside the bank for a few days prior to the incident.

“It is likely that the robbers had been staking out the bank for several days to determine the best time to steal the machine,” said a source.

A bank staff, who declined to be named, said the robbers had allegedly driven the 4WD vehicle right to the bank entrance and dragged the machine by fastening it with a chain tied to the vehicle.

“We have two ATMs and three other machines for cheque deposits and cash deposits,” he said, adding that the thieves had aimed the ATM believed to contain more money.

The bank, however, has yet to determine how much money was in the ATM when it was carted away.

Checks by The Star showed that there were drag marks outside the bank and some of the tiles outside the building were cracked.

Policemen were also seen questioning the staff but the bank remained opened.

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Roslan Zainuddin confirmed the case and said that police had yet to make any arrests.

“The case has been classified under Section 457 of the Penal Code for burglary,” he said.

It is believed that police are also investigating if the incident is linked to a robbery attempt at a bank in Taman Daya here at around 4am on Wednesday.

During the incident, a group of thieves had tried to drag out an ATM using a vehicle but abandoned their plans when the alarm went off.

Some of the pictures of the attempted theft had also been uploaded on Facebook.

Robbers grab RM298,000 from ATM

ALOR STAR: Robbers escaped with about RM298,000 after they prised open an automated-teller machine at a bank in Jalan Kota here today.

No one was hurt in the robbery which was believed to have taken place at about 4am.

 

Employees of the bank found the machine damaged when they arrived at work at 9am.
